Jane Austen wrote the first draft of the novel in the form of a novel in letters epistolary form sometime around when she was about years old and gave it the title Elinor and Marianne She later changed the form to a narrative and the title to Sense and Sensibility Sense in the book means good judgment or prudence and sensibility means sensitivity or emotionality Sense is identified with the character of Elinor while sensibility is identified with the character of Marianne By changing the title Austen added philosophical depth to what began as a sketch of two characters The title of the book and that of her next published novel Pride and Prejudice may be suggestive of political conflicts of the s .

Austen biographer Claire Tomalin argues that Sense and Sensibility has a wobble in its approach which developed because Austen in the course of writing the novel gradually became less certain about whether sense or sensibility should triumph Austen characterises Marianne as a sweet lady with attractive qualities intelligence musical talent frankness and the capacity to love deeply She also acknowledges that Willoughby with all his faults continues to love and in some measure appreciate Marianne For these reasons some readers find Marianne s ultimate marriage to Colonel Brandon an unsatisfactory ending Other interpretations however have argued that Austen s intention was not to debate the superior value of either sense or sensibility in good judgment but rather to demonstrate that both are equally important but must be applied with good balance to one another .

Dashwood extracts a promise from his son that he will take care of his half sisters however John s selfish and greedy wife Fanny soon persuades him to renege John and Fanny immediately take up their place as the new owners of Norland while the Dashwood women are reduced to the position of unwelcome guests Mrs Dashwood begins looking for somewhere else to live .

In the meantime Fanny s brother Edward Ferrars a pleasant unassuming intelligent but reserved young man visits Norland and soon forms an attachment with Elinor Fanny disapproves the match and offends Mrs Dashwood with the implication that Elinor is motivated by money rather than love Mrs Dashwood indignantly speeds her search for a new home by Jane Austen, Read Monkey, Pablo

i I never have been in love it is not my way or my nature and I do not think I ever shall i br br Beautiful clever rich and single Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage Nothing however delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships Emma is often seen as Jane Austen s most flawless work br br This edition includes a new chronology and additional suggestions for further reading, Twenty seven year old Anne Elliot is Austen s most adult heroine Eight years before the story proper begins she is happily betrothed to a naval officer Frederick Wentworth but she precipitously breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long lasting regret When later Wentworth returns from sea a rich and successful captain he finds Anne s family on the brink of financial ruin and his own sister a tenant in Kellynch Hall the Elliot estate All the tension of the novel revolves around one question Will Anne and Wentworth be reunited in their love br br Jane Austen once compared her writing to painting on a little bit of ivory inches square Readers of i Persuasion i will discover that neither her skill for delicate ironic observations on social custom love and marriage nor her ability to apply a sharp focus lens to English manners and morals has deserted her in her final finished work, i We have all been more or less to blame br every one of us excepting Fanny i br br Taken from the poverty of her parents home Fanny Price is brought up with her rich cousins at Mansfield Park acutely aware of her humble rank and with only her cousin Edmund as an ally When Fanny s uncle is absent in Antigua Mary Crawford and her brother Henry arrive in the neighbourhood bringing with them London glamour and a reckless taste for flirtation As her female cousins vie for Henry s attention and even Edmund falls for Mary s dazzling charms only Fanny remains doubtful about the Crawfords influence and finds herself more isolated than ever A subtle examination of social position and moral integrity i Mansfield Park i is one of Jane Austen s most profound works br br This edition is based on the first edition of It includes a new chronology additional suggestions for further reading and the original Penguin Classics introduction by Tony Tanner, Northanger Abbey depicts the misadventures of Catherine Morland young ingenuous and mettlesome and an indefatigable reader of gothic novels Their romantic excess and dark overstatement feed her imagination as tyrannical fathers and diabolical villains work their evil on forlorn heroines in isolated settings What could be more remote from the uneventful securities of life in the midland counties of England Yet as Austen brilliantly contrasts fiction with reality ordinary life takes a more sinister turn and edginess and circumspection are reaffirmed alongside comedy and literary burlesque br Also including Austen s other short fictions Lady Susan The Watsons and Sanditon this valuable new edition shows her to be as innovative at the start of her career as at its close
